Andy Scott presents the festival finale super-gig

Andy Scott is a British tenor saxophonist equally at home in jazz and classical contexts and an award-winning composer.

“Having previously played at Hull Jazz Festival and having a long association working with young musicians in Hull on specific creative projects, I am really thrilled to be able to showcase two new collaborations, and to talk about what life is like as a professional musician.

I’ll play a short set with the brilliant Carmel Smickersgill. Carmel is a Manchester based composer working predominantly within electronic DIY, classical and theatre music. We will create soundscapes via free improvisation, Carmel using ableton live.

I’ve gathered together some of the most amazing improvising musicians that I know, for a one-off performance. I play in a trio, called Hydra, with Dave Hassell (drums/percussion) & Nik Svarc (guitar), and also Gemini with Rob Cope (soprano saxophone & bass clarinet) & Liam Noble (piano). I’ll be writing some simple musical sketches that we collectively interpret and improvise around. I don’t want to restrict these musicians with too much notated music, the music could go anywhere, and everyone will follow!

It’s risk-taking, exciting, musically dangerous, imaginative and creative, and it will be great to have you there on the journey with us! “

Hull's Albemarle Music Centre accommodates a performance area which seats 250 people as well as rehearsal and teaching rooms for 15 Hull musical ensembles ranging from youth orchestras and brass bands to jazz groups and choirs. Built for the city by the developers of the St Stephen's scheme, it replaces the original Albemarle Music Centre which was demolished to make way for the £200m shopping, hotel and leisure complex. The new Albermarle Music Centre opened in October 2007, providing an exciting new addition to the city that has been welcomed by more than 600 young Hull musicians as a hub of musical activity and education.
