Discover Dance: Two flagship dance companies return this February who have a long tradition of performing in Hull

Both Northern Ballet and Motionhouse have been groundbreaking companies since the 1980s. Keeping true to their artistic vision yet continuing to grow and refine their offer they have broken with traditions and influenced the development of ballet and contemporary dance in the UK. Hull has been part of both their journeys.

Northern Ballet will be performing Little Red Riding Hood Friday 16 February at Hull New Theatre.

Northern Ballet began to focus on the theatre in ballets as much as the dancing in 1987. This change moved them from a successful small scale ballet company into the renowned innovative company they are today. They also led the way in creating ballet for children with Hull Truck hosting one of their first shows and are now fully established at Hull New Theatre.

Their current production shows that a little kindness goes a long way in this playful retelling of the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red Riding Hood is a kind little girl who loves her family. On the way to visit her grandmother, she meets a very hungry wolf in the woods – but is he really as ‘big and bad’ as the stories say?

Join Little Red on an enchanting adventure as she discovers the importance of kindness, makes some unexpected friends, and learns that things aren’t always as they seem.

A reimagining of the much-loved fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood is the perfect opportunity for your little ones to enjoy the magic of live ballet, music, and theatre.

With sell-out performances and a series of hugely successful CBeebies TV adaptations, Northern Ballet’s productions for children continue to delight audiences year after year.

Internationally renowned dance-circus company Motionhouse returns to Hull New Theatre, with its latest multimedia production Hidden, a jaw-dropping dance-circus piece Friday 20 – Saturday 21 February.

Set up by Louise Richards and Kevin Finnan MBE in the 1980s, they first came to Hull in 1990 performing The Ticking Man at Middleton Hall. Since then, they have re-visited the city many times performing at Hull Truck and first performing at Hull New Theatre in 2022 with their ground breaking piece Nobody.  Freedom Festival have also supported their outdoor work early on by hosting Block and have returned to the festival many times. The creation of Block and the launch of their outdoor work have now reached its tenth anniversary.

Thought-provoking and poignant, Hidden explores how, in an increasingly divided world, light can come out of darkness in times of crisis. At the cutting edge of live performance and digital integration, Hidden is a powerful blend of artforms.

Gravity-defying choreography, an emotive soundscape and a shape-shifting set combine with ground-breaking projections to create an immersive world on stage.

The fearless performers throw, catch and lift each other with immense precision, thrilling audiences with heart-in-the-mouth moments in this action-packed new production.

Hidden has all the Motionhouse trademark moves with the fearless performers throwing, catching and lifting each other with immense precision, blending breath-taking dance with effortlessly thrilling circus feats packed with heart-in-the-mouth moments – a spectacular and unforgettable production.

The world class dance programme at Hull New Theatre continues in June/July with Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man coming Tuesday 30 June – Saturday 4 July to Hull New Theatre.
