The annual Chris Ketchell Memorial Lecture

Tuesday 15th April 2025, 1 p.m. at Hull Minster, Free, No booking required.

Chris Ketchell (1944-2011) was a legendary repository of local historical knowledge. His influence upon the study of the history of Hull and the East Riding, and those who followed him in this, was phenomenal. The Local History Unit, which he built up from literally nothing, was the seedbed that inspired many to embrace local history and pursue it further in a multitude of ways. With his passing it was felt that his life should be celebrated in a manner that Chris would appreciate and what better than a lecture on local history. This lecture is the latest in the series.

Helen Good: “The Hull Raid on the Lincolnshire Pirates, 1577”
The pirates of Lincolnshire, from Clee to Ingoldmells, would lie in wait in the mouth of the Humber to prey on the shipping of Hull.  They became insufferable, and in 1577 the town sent out a ship to counter attack.  This is the story of what happened next, how the rise of piracy in Lincolnshire came about, and how Hull’s actions were negotiated with the government in London. There will also be a cutlass and a short discussion on how to knit a pirate hat.
