Young factory worker Karoline struggles to survive in post-WWI Copenhagen. When she loses her job just after discovering she is pregnant, she takes on a position as a wet nurse for an older woman named Dagmar to help support herself. Dagmar operates a clandestine adoption agency under the guise of a sweet shop, assisting disadvantaged mothers place their unwanted newborns in foster homes. The two women form an unexpected bond, until a sudden revelation about the nature of their work changes everything.
