Presented by Prof. Mark Lorch, Professor of Public Engagement and Science Communication at The University of Hull. This talk expands on the theme of the ‘Science’ Light show by looking at how the Earth’s eco system hinges on the workings of one protein; Rubisco, as it is known, is responsible the 1st step in plants extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it to sugars and oxygen. You’d think that such an important protein would have evolved to be super-efficient. But instead it’s fallen foul of an evolutionary trap resulting in an enzyme, that is quite frankly, rubbish at its job.
This talk will last roughly 30 minute + Q&A time and we would suggest booking tickets for 7.45pm or 8pm show to enjoy the visuals of the light show with an understanding of some of the science behind the theme it focuses on.
