🦈Dive Deeper: Into the World of Sharks

šŸ—“Ā Wednesday 22nd October 2025Ā |Ā šŸ•”Ā Doors open 6:30pmĀ |Ā šŸøĀ Bar open all evening

Join us this autumnĀ for aĀ jaw-someĀ evening of shark-themed talks asĀ Dive DeeperĀ returns — and this time, we’re heading into the deep with some of the ocean’s most incredible (and misunderstood) creatures.

🌊 First up, we plunge into the cold, dark waters of the Arctic withĀ Dr Cath WallerĀ andĀ Dr Charlotte Hopkins, uncovering the secrets of one of the ocean’s most mysterious animals:
🦈 The 400-Year-Old Greenland Shark

šŸ”¬ Then, we go behind the scenes withĀ Graham Hill, Head of Animal Care atĀ The Deep, as he shares insights into the health and husbandry of sharks (elasmobranchs) in aquariums — what it takes to care for these amazing animals.

šŸŒ Finally, we’re joined byĀ Paul Cox, CEO ofĀ The Shark Trust, to hear about their inspiringĀ Oceanics Programme — focusing on the majestic oceanic shark species, their life stories, and the vital conservation work being done to protect them.

šŸ’¬Ā Fascinating talksĀ |Ā šŸ¹Ā Relaxed atmosphereĀ | 🦈 A night to sink your teeth into

Grab a drink, take a seat, and prepare for an unforgettable evening celebrating sharks, science, and the people working to protect these apex predators for future generations.

Dr Cath Waller, Lecturer University of Hull & Dr Charlotte Hopkins, Senior Lecturer in Marine ConservationĀ – The 400-Year-Old Shark: Secrets from the Arctic Deep

Synopsis:Ā Known for its slow movements and incredibly long life—some may be more than 400 years old—this shark is a true survivor of the Arctic. In this talk we will journey beneath the ice off Eastern Greenland to discover how these giants manage to survive in such extreme conditions and why they matter to the balance of the ocean. As climate change brings rapid shifts to the Arctic, the Greenland shark’s future is uncertain, making it more important than ever to understand and protect this ancient species.

Graham Hill, Head of Animal Care at The DeepĀ – Elasmobranch Health at The Deep

Synopsis:Ā Shark health and husbandry at the Deep including veterinary firsts, advancing elasmobranch veterinary care and behaviour training.

Paul Cox, CEO, Shark TrustĀ – Oceanic Sharks – Protecting the Ocean Wanderers

Synopsis:Ā Some of our best-known and most spectacular sharks spend their time wandering the world’s ocean – moving between the waters of different countries and the international water of the high seas. Faced with the pressure of intensive fishing from an international fleet, this group of Oceanic Sharks (and rays) is now seriously under threat. What can be done? How do you mobilise the international community to protect these species and ensure a sustainable future and a healthy ocean? The Shark Trust’s Oceanic’s Programme is on the case – blending data crunching with policy advocacy and public support to bring forward the fisheries management solution to the problem of overfishing on the high seas. Find out about the stunning oceanic shark group, their life histories and the work that’s being done to conserve their populations for future generations.
