Community Brand Case Study: Street Angels

The Street Angels are exactly that. Their main role is to provide a safe support system for those who become vulnerable on Friday and Saturday evenings in Hull city centre.

Working with a number of partners, the Angels patrol the city’s streets between 10pm and 2am.

Since its launch in 2012, the project has helped more than 3,000 people who have found themselves in a bit of a pickle while enjoying the night-time economy. Hull Street Angels Trinity has full charitable status and a board of trustees, which helps to oversee the running of the organisation.

The 14 active volunteers who work for the project offer more than a helping hand. As well as being friendly and approachable, they are fully trained in first aid and conflict management. They hand out bottles of water, flip-flops and blankets, and are able to help make sure vulnerable people get home safely.

These Angels are real-life superheroes. They give up their own time to do something incredible that gives back to the community, and ultimately makes Hull a nicer place to be. For 2017, the team is planning to build upon the success of the scheme so far and ensure that visitors to the city are well looked after, too.  A cycle responders initiative has already launched, which allows the Angels to cover more ground, more quickly. It also means they can now easily transport a defibrillator, which could mean the difference between life and death in a first-aid emergency.
