Hull FC and HKR started life as Rugby Union teams and were founder members as the Rugby League pulled away to form a professional game designed for spectators and not played as a hobby. A Tale of Two Cities revisits the teams and derbies from the 1890s down to now with blistering banter from our stand up historians (Stan Haywood, HKR and Mike Watts, Hull FC) and songsters Lloyd Dobbs, Dave Gawthorpe, Andy Watson (Hillbilly Troupe) and Lyn Acton (Pearls Cab Ride). Hull FC legend Sammy Lloyd keeps the eyes on the score.
The story line plays out against a backdrop of the industrial revolution and the clash of community: HKR, from the East Hull docks plays Hull FC and the West Hull fishing community. There is context – how French Jeu XIII fought the Nazis and how RL opened its teams to anyone who could play and anyone – regardless of colour or creed – who wanted to watch or help out. Diversity is part of RL DNA.
There is Jack Harrison, 52 tries before WW1 to be awarded a postumous VC at Oppy Wood in 1917 – missing in action. Fast forward, the Derby at Wembley 10-5; two sides of the same coin.
History doesn’t repeat itself – but it rhymes. The Derby of words and song takes us back and has everyone involved in a singalong great night out!
