A performance of two contrasting halves – A first set featuring five of our 2022/23 season’s commissions, engaging and varied new works from some of the most exciting new generation of UK composers, adding to the ASQs continuing legacy of over 100 works written for the group in the last 37 years. Internationally renowned for creating a repertoire filled with colour, vibrancy and genuine emotional connection, the Apollo Quartet are delighted to be sharing our brand new seasons commissions with you – each of the works in this programme showcases different aspects of the sound world of the saxophone quartet, creating moods, colours and textures ranging from the sublime and ethereal to driving energetic and rhythmically compelling.
The second set features the Quartet’s acclaimed music with silent film project. Expect acrobatic flies, dancing pigs, collapsing bridges, drunken hallucinations, exploding heads and an infernal cakewalk, all beautifully set to music and performed live to film in the age old tradition from the very first years of the moving image. Without doubt, Journey Across the Impossible is the ASQ;s most popular and enduring project – witty, fast-paced and thought-provoking, this set of music and films will engage audience member of all ages – despite some of the films dating from as far back as 1905, the messages and themes still resonate with a modern audience, especially when brought to life by the Apollo’s own beautifully crafted scores, played live to screen, exactly as in the golden age of silent film.
