It is a story told through words and music about the thriving industry on the banks of the River Hull where new ships would be launched broadside into the narrow river before being towed into Hull to be fitted out.
Using interviews with the people who worked there, as well as archive images of work at the shipyard, Gordon Meredith brings those voices to life, capturing the energy and emotions of a workforce that designed and built some of the most seaworthy vessels ever to be launched.
Following the success of Swinging the Lamp which toured in 2018 and 2019 after it’s first performance at the Stage 4Beverley Festival, Gordon once again dips into the archives to combine his love of social history, theatre and music in what is an entertaining and informative show.
Artist, musician, and composer Wai Wan joins Gordon on stage to perform an evocative and moving soundtrack, forged from recordings taken on board one of the ships built at the yard, the Arctic Corsair.
Wai Wan explores new compositional approaches to creating sound using sampling and modular synthesis, to generate musical and abstract forms. The wonderfully evocative recordings of the sounds of hitting, hammering and tapping the steel interior of the vessel are intertwined with a beautiful and moving soundtrack composed by Wai.
‘Broadside On’ is both an authentic historical account and a beautifully moving theatrical and aural experience!
