We suspect that you would need to be a child of the 70s to remember the popular weekly TV game show “Call My Bluff”. The last episode was aired on BBC2 in 1988 and because, perhaps, the 80s viewers’ choice was limited to just four channels at that time it proved to be extremely popular.
The aim of the game was to identify the true meaning of an obscure word from three different definitions, each proffered by an eloquent, bow-tied, formally-attired personality. Two of the definitions were fictitious – but generally believable – making the task rather more difficult than you might expect.
Our “Call my Quaff” event takes its idea from this family friendly, pseudo-intellectual exercise in word-mongery and moves it to a subject with which we are far more comfortable – wine.
It’s the same concept although somewhat sartorially inferior. In our version everyone gets a glass of wine whilst three chancers of dubious character (the Panel) relay three different versions of what the wine is, where it’s from and its story, and your team’s task is to choose which is the truth. Then we all just drain our glass & off we go again.
We do this five times with different wines and the team that gets the most true answers wins.
Of course we provide a tapas course with each glass too, as it would be irresponsible and thoughtless not to! Our chefs rise to this challenge and usually manage to come up trumps with some thought provoking dishes that pick out the nuances & characteristics of each wine. It also makes a nice change for them working a shift & not cooking a single portion of Patatas Bravas!
So, ring up your friends to make a team, snag some tickets, dig out your old kipper ties & shoulder pads and get it in your 2024 diary!

The youngest of Ambiente's four sites, they opened their Hull restaurant in 2016 on Humber Street, one of Hull’s favourite streets full of independent businesses so they certainly feel right at home! Whilst the exterior of the restaurant retains a touch of the building’s past, the interior has been transformed into a contemporary, vibrant and upbeat space with a host of knowledgeable staff ready to welcome you with open arms. Inside you’ll find an open plan dining area, featuring booths, banquets and tables as well as a bar area. For those summer days, the outdoor seating area overlooking the marina will whisk you away to the Mediterranean.
