Dive Deeper

Join us for our autumn instalment of ‘Dive Deeper’, on Tuesday 8th October 2024 from 6:30pm. During this evening of enlightening talks we will explore the benefit of blue and green spaces to both people and nature, how being on, in or near to water is a benefit to our mental and physical health and how to keep safe and enjoy the water. Finally we will hear from The Deep’s very own Assistant Curator on how we are working with our colleagues at New England Aquarium Animal Rescue Centre in Boston, USA to rescue, rehabilitate and release cold stunned sea turtles each winter.

Matthew Morgan (PhD Researcher at the University of Hull) – Urban Biodiversity around Blue and Green Spaces in Hull

Synopsis: In the face of climate change and biodiversity decline, understanding and supporting nature within urban areas is crucial for sustainable development. Using Hull as a case study, this talk will explore how modern ecological techniques and citizen science records are being combined to better understand urban ecology and biodiversity trends across the city. It will also examine how nature-friendly management and the ‘rewilding’ of blue and green spaces have the potential to significantly benefit both people and nature.

Liam Fayle-Parr (RNLI Water Safety Ambassador) – How to enjoy the water safely

Synopsis: Being in, on or by the water enriches our lives and is good for us both mentally and physically. When the RNLI is called to assist those in difficulty, we gain insight into the conditions and scenarios that catch people out. Whether you are paddle boarding, swimming or walking the coast, there are certain precautions we can take that can make these experiences even more enjoyable and most importantly, keep you safe. In this talk I will cover the basics of enjoying the water safely.

Richard Oades, (Assistant Curator, The Deep) – Sea turtle Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release at New England Aquarium, USA

Synopsis: Each year, around autumn time, hundreds of sea turtles are found stranded along the many miles of beaches in Cape Cod. Seasonal changes, as well as climate change, cause this annual phenomenon which creates a sudden temperature changes affecting many species including the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, vulnerable Leatherback turtle, the endangered Green turtle, and the vulnerable Loggerhead turtle. Find out more about the project and how The Deep’s aquarist team travel to New England Aquarium Animal Rescue Centre in Boston, Massachusetts each year to support colleagues to rescue, rehabilitate and release as many turtles as possible, hopefully helping populations to recover.
