Summary

Hull College is supporting a symphonic celebration of the music of 8-bit British home computing with the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra.

The 8-Bit Symphony concert will feature 90 plus epic minutes of lovingly orchestrated musical genius from the Commodore 64, the ZX Spectrum and the Amstrad CPC.

It will also include compositions from legendary Hull-born composer, Rob Hubbard, who pioneered the use of music in gaming and wrote for more than 75 games in the 1980s.

Rob Hubbard’s orchestrations from International Karate, Monty on the Run, Monty on the Run High Score, Kentilla and Flash Gordon have been selected to be played in the concert.

There will be additional orchestrations by Gremlin’s Ben Daglish, Elite’s Mark Cooksey, Ocean/Interceptor alumnus Gari Biasillo, Cosmi’s Paul Norman, Tomb Raider’s Peter Connelly, Team 17’s Allister Brimble and veteran C64 remixer and impresario Chris Abbott.

The concert, which is also supported by C64Audio.com, a website dedicated to the music of the Commodore 64, will also be a reunion.

More than 100 veterans including musicians, graphic artists, programmers and software house bosses will attend, including Jon Hare, Tony Crowther, Andrew Hewson and more and there will be an opportunity for retrospectives, signings and interviews.

8-Bit Symphony was conceived by 8-Bit impresario, record label boss, publisher and music remixer Chris Abbott, and produced in conjunction with Hull College.

It will be performed by the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Robin Tait, at Hull City Hall on Saturday, 15 June at 7.30pm.
