The Charterhouse was founded by Sir Michael de la Pole in 1384 as an almshouse for the elderly, the Charterhouse continues to house retired residents.

The present building to the north of Charterhouse Lane dates from 1780 and has a handsome domed entrance and a fine Georgian era chapel inside. To the south is the Master’s House which, despite severe war damage, essentially dates back to 1660. Its complete 10-bays exterior can best be appreciated from the rear where you will also find a peaceful walled garden. This also contains a mulberry tree reputed to be Hull’s oldest and dating back over 350 years to when the poet Andrew Marvell played under it as a boy!
