Bach: St John Passion
Conductor: Julian Savory
HBC Orchestra
Soloists – Toby Ward: Tenor/Evangelist, Richard Cressall: Jesus, Quentin Brown: Bass and Pilate, Adam Piplica: counter-tenor and Joyee Cole: soprano.
One of Bach’s earliest tasks when he took up his post at Leipzig in1723 was to write a setting of the passion for performance on Good Friday 1724. Bach produced a marvellously dramatic setting of the Passion story, based on St John’s Gospel. Included are opening and closing numbers for the chorus which are unforgettable, dramatic commentaries in solo numbers, as well as wonderful harmonisations of passion chorales.
