What does it mean to be human? Can we solve the mystery of who we are by learning more about the brain? Or are we more than the sum total of our neurons? Join Professor John Wyatt as he explores this fascinating and multi-dimensional topic.
John Wyatt is Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics and Perinatology at University College London and a Senior Researcher at the Faraday Institute, Cambridge. His background is as a consultant neonatologist and as an academic in applied neuroscience researching into the prevention of brain injury in newborn babies.
John is also President of the Christian Medical Fellowship and Chair of the Kirby Laing Institute for Christian Ethics in Cambridge. He has a long-standing interest in ethical dilemmas raised by advances in biomedical technology and engages frequently in public and professional consultations and debates about medical ethics. His book Matters of Life and Death has been translated into more than 10 languages. His recent book, Dying well, deals with the opportunities and challenges which dying brings.
John is currently co-leading a multidisciplinary research project into the social and human implications of advances in artificial intelligence and robotics technology, based at the Faraday Institute.
There will opportunities for audience participation through a Q&A session and there will be a book table at the event.
