Manchester Collective – radicalising the live music experience

The disruptive northern ensemble ramps up its ambitious third season, bringing their trademark “radical human experiences” to experimental, experiential audiences across the UK.

Critically acclaimed Manchester Collective to premiere Pierrot Lunaire, “A Nasty piece of work”, at Trinity Market, Hull Saturday 17 November. Manchester Collective are an ensemble of classically trained musicians who create radical human experiences through live music, for a range of new audiences.

Schoenberg’s controversial music about madness, death, sex, dreams, and trauma will be presented by Elizabeth Alker (BBC Radio 3 & 6 Music), and with artists from the Warren in Hull opening the evening. Trinity Market will sound and feel like it never has before.

Hull based Shoot the Bull will also be providing food and drink on an evening that promises to be very different to your usual musical, or classical experience as Alker unravels and dissects the startling, surreal and unsettling Pierrot.

“Pierrot Lunaire” (November 2018) will be the first show at the White Hotel; NTS/BBC 6 Music/BBC Radio 3 broadcaster Elizabeth Alker presents the show, guiding audiences through this astonishing masterpiece. Performed by Manchester Collective in a world premiere English translation by British director and librettist David Pountney, this visceral staged production paints a vivid picture of a woman on the edge portrayed by acclaimed Australian soprano Lotte Betts- Dean

The wild, seductive chords of Schoenberg’s masterpiece have intrigued and confounded audiences for over 100 years. This season, Manchester Collective brings this sensual and
dangerous world to life, performed in English, in a new translation by David Pountney. Manchester Collective produce this original, visceral staged production, delving deep into the
inner world of the unnamed female protagonist. Acclaimed Australian soprano Lotte Betts-Dean paints a vivid picture of a woman on the edge – inspiration, struggle, ambition, and self doubt.
Pierrot Lunaire is presented by NTS/BBC Radio 6 broadcaster Elizabeth Alker, who will guide audiences though the emotional wreckage of this musical apocalypse.
