This lecture will explore the connections between the UK’s largest county and the world’s greatest ancient civilisation, from the Egyptian artefacts in our region’s museums to our wealth of Egyptian-inspired architecture. Yet above all, Jo will focus on the little-known men and women from our region who, despite often challenging backgrounds, made very significant contributions to Egyptology.

Professor Joann Fletcher of the Department of Archaeology at the University of York is also Lead Ambassador for the Egypt Exploration Society, patron of Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust and patron of the North’s leading arts and environmental festival ‘Big Ideas by the Sea’. Her books include ‘The Story of Egypt’, ‘Cleopatra the Great’ and ‘The Search for Nefertiti’, and having won a BAFTA and Royal Television Society Award for her television work, she’s written and presented several series for the BBC including ‘Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher’.
