In partnership with the Wilberforce Institute, the lecture will begin at 4.30pm, directly after the Museum closes, and all will take place in Oriel Chambers, 27 High Street, Hull, HU1 1N.

Dr Nicholas Evans is Senior Lecturer in Diaspora History at the University of Hull, and longstanding member of the Wilberforce Institute.  His talk, held in conjunction with the Cultures of Incarceration Centre, is entitled ‘Robben Island and the challenging cultural heritage of incarceration’.

Dr Evans, who is a founding member of the Wilberforce House Museum Advisory Board, champions work to decolonise heritage and amplify the experiences of Black people living in contemporary Britain. Since 2023 he has served on the National Centre for Teaching Black History Educator’s Steering Group at the International Slavery Museum.

Wilberforce House is the birthplace of William Wilberforce, famous campaigner against the slave trade. Admission to Wilberforce House is free. The museum tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition, as well as dealing with contemporary slavery. Galleries also offer a fascinating glimpse into West African culture.
