In partnership with the Wilberforce Institute, the lecture will begin at 4.30pm, directly after the Museum closes, and all will take place in Oriel Chambers, 27 High Street, Hull, HU1 1N.

Simon C. Smith is Professor of International History in the School of Humanities at the University of Hull. Professor Smith is an expert on British imperialism and decolonization in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, as well as post-war Anglo-American relations. The title of his talk, which emerges out of the recent fellowship he was awarded at the Wilberforce Institute, is ‘Slave Voices and the Quest for Freedom in the Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula in the first half of the twentieth century’.

Wilberforce House is the birthplace of William Wilberforce, famous campaigner against the slave trade. Admission to Wilberforce House is free. The museum tells the story of the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition, as well as dealing with contemporary slavery. Galleries also offer a fascinating glimpse into West African culture.
